The Webbs from Nanaimo, British Columbia

William Edmond and Janet Webb of Nanaimo, British Columbia are my great-great-great-grandparents. William Edmond emigrated from England sometime between 1860-1866. Janet emigrated from Scotland around 1868.

They had at least seven children. Janet Blyth, Henrietta, James Allen, John Edmund, Lillian, William Arthur, and Annie Margaret. James Allen and John Edmund passed away within a couple of weeks of each other. They were 4 and 3 respectively. There are four records of other Webb children from Nanaimo, two passing away at an early age of 3 or 4, and two dying as infants. (I've ordered the microfilm of birth records during these 10 years, which will include the parents' names. Hopefully I'll be able to match all of the children!)

William made his living as a baker. In the 1875 British Columbia Voters List, he is listed as a freeholder which means "a proprietor who holds a piece of land outright and has the right to lease, rent or sell as he pleases." According to the requirements to vote, William was
a natural-born British Subject being able to read the language of his Country, having resided in this Colony for six months previous to sending in his claim to vote as hereinafter mentioned, who shall have freehold estate in possession, situate within the Electoral District for which his vote is to be given, of the clear value of two hundred and fifty dollars, above all charges and incumbrances affecting the same; or shall have a leasehold estate in possession, situate as aforesaid, of the annual value of forty dollars above all charges and incumbrances affecting the same.

Janet Blyth married Percival Ty Helton (Lyttleton?) Good on September 2, 1891. He made his living as a weighman. She passed away only three years later on December 9, 1894. She had one son and one daughter.

-A grandson, Allan A.B. (Arthur Blyth) Good is listed in the 1901 Canadian census, living with William and Janet. He was born on July 19, 1894. He worked as a Druggist before he enlisted in the military. He enlisted on September 17, 1915 when he was 21 years old. He fought in World War I. He served in the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force. He married Lizzie May Bendell on April 21, 1919. He died back in his hometown of Nanaimo on May 5, 1973.

-Janet R.W. Good is listed in the 1901 census living with her father Percivel L. Good. in Nanaimo, British Columbia. She was born on December 8, 1892.

Henrietta Webb married James Edward McKenzie on November 24, 1892. They had at least three children.
-William E McKenzie was born on May 22, 1893. He married Elizabeth Wilson on June 3, 1914.
-Victor C. McKenzie was born on April 14, 1895.
-Ernest E. McKenzie was born on March 9, 1897. He married Isabel Henriett McMillan on October 23, 1918. He died on November 28, 1963 in Nanaimo.

Lillian Webb married Winifred Foster on November 28, 1903. They lived in Victoria, British Columbia. They had at least five children: Allan, Izzett, Wynn Edmund, Lillian, and Vivian.

William Arthur Webb married Margaret Steele on September 4, 1903. He worked as a clerk. (I haven't been able to find records of children yet.)

Annie Margaret was born on September 2, 1887. (I am still looking for a marriage and/or death date.)

  1. Mike has some Webbs on his side of the tree, and they are from England (mostly the Cambridgeshire area). Do you know anything about William’s father or siblings? I think we may have a match-up, I’ll have to shuffle through some group records. If there is success, I’ll be scanning and sending stuff your way! Including an interesting article! : )

    Keep searching.
